News ~ New York Picture preview

August 4th, 2009

Wow! Just back from a week in the big apple and it was something else. A taster…

Boy did it rain! But that never stopped us creating pictures. I used a coloured gel

Boy did it rain! But that never stopped us creating pictures. I used a coloured gel on the flash units to add some life to this shot. Alex's feet were rather damp to say the least but we still had such a great time in the 28C degree warmth.

I had Alex climbing up the wall for this shot. Concrete blocka and a splash of flash from 2 Speedlights

I had Alex climbing up the wall for this shot. Concrete blocks painted black and a splash of flash from 2 Speedlights as shown was all I used for this striking set up on the street. We were stopping the traffic and having great fun.

I’m not sure I could have coped with another day, it was so full on. While I was there I did a couple of 1 day Urban Portrait workshops for a group of delegates from around the globe. I’ll be posting the rest of the New York picture sets tomorrow once Marko has had ‘a chance to enhance‘.

While in New York I visited B&H, as one does and wow, what an experience. There seemed to be a geeky high level goods track running around the store and I’m still baffled by the system but it worked really well. I bought a Nikon SB-900 Speedlight for my workshops and a pair of Canon 10×30 image stabilised binoculars for the sightseeing.

On Monday, I met up with a fellow photographer, New Yorker and all round great bloke, William and we headed down to the Meat Packing district to check out the scene. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was no reason to move more than 100 yds to get a days shooting in, as the place was so rich with texture and great light. There were smells too, rotting carcases and rat poo among them ;-) All we had to do was avoid getting arrested and great pictures would be assured.

More pictures tomorrow. (Wednesday 5th August).

Did you know that B and H is owned by Orthodox Jews and as such, they do not work on a Saturday. Thats amazing in the current fiscal state of the world. Nice one.

Great sneak preview shots Damien. Bet it was fun keeping all your kit dry in that rain!

B&H is certainly an experience in itself and something every photographer visitng NY should go and expereince. I found the staff really helpful when I was looking for some kit when over there a few years ago. The converyor belt system above your heads is certainly quite a sight.

Looking forward to seeing some more of the shots tomorrow.
