Here is a slideshow of a few pictures from the Speedlight Mastery workshop I ran earlier this week. I have set the pictures to some royalty free music using Fotomagico slideshow software. The music really isn’t a good choice so feel free to turn your speakers down. I’m hoping Chloe, our multi talented model can come up with something to replace it as she is a musician too, ooh and a writer :) Movie after the jump…
All the light that I added was from Canon Speedlights triggered by the Pocket Wizard TTL system. There was no setting sun so we made our own with a Speedlight. All in all, we had a fantastically creative day. Chloe was great fun and totally professional. We did get moved on at one point though, escorted from the premises, for photographing Chloe in front of a purple painted wooden hoarding. It was frustrating because common sense no longer plays a part in security.
Please feel free to comment below. If you were with me on the day please share your experiences. I have more Speedlight Mastery workshops coming up very soon so please take a look at the details here. Go on, you know you want to.
Damien was inspirational on the Speedlight mastery course – sharing his thought and ideas so generously as he prepared for each shoot – watching a true artist at work and then working through a practical session – what more could one ask for in a day
I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone wishing to learn how to use their speedlights in beautifully creative ways
Thank you so much Damien

HI Damien
I love your images especially the ones where you have used blue gels, How do you get the walls and background blue, but the models exposed correctly ??
Oh do I have to come on one of your days to find that out ?
Regards
Steve
Just out of interest do you use the same software for your clients viewings in your studio.
Richard
Hi Damien,
Nice images, however I much prefer the old style of post where you show the images and give a short description of the lighting; it’s far more informative and I can linger over the images that catch my eye more than others.
Also, having a slow broadband speed means the page takes longer to load because of the video file being embedded rather than being an optional link.

Nice series Damien, I pickup up on your bit about being moved on by security… My last shot in the city of London was a nightmare, the poor model got changed and ready for each location, then a jobsworth moved us on… I was mad, it’s not like I was spraying the walls with paint or anything!!!
A week later I was in Bath doing a shoot, one of my shots was with the model leaning against one of very expensive homes on The Royal Crescent, when the owner appeared, we said sorry, he said, “no you carry on” what a nice chap… :)
Hi Damien,
I felt the same as you at first but then I learnt how to slow the show down and insert some movie clips as well.
Anyway, if the customer likes it, who am I to argue?
Hope you are enjoying the weather – I fried on the golf course this morning !!
All the best
John
Hi Pooch,
What a shoot! thanks for the endorsement. Pooch’s shots are here
Hi Stuart,
My plan is to not make slideshows for blog posts anymore because no matter what format they appear there will always be someone who can’t see them. The advantage of a slideshow is you get to see the whole shoot, 50+ pictures but the disadvantage is that I don’t get to write about my techniques and settings used.
I’ll return to regular posts on Monday with the Urban Portrait set that I shot on Wednesday.
Damien.
Thanks John,
The trouble for me with Animoto is it’s all about the slideshow and not about the pictures. Way to busy for me. Even the few zooms I’ve donevhere are not really needed as they detract from the pictures.
Damien.
For me it’s a black box with music :( No images
Hi Damien thanks for a great day I’m so pleased with the shots I got and I would recommend anyone who is thinking of taking speedlite photography to the extreme to get booked in you won’t be dissapointed. I have put a slideshow on my home page with a bunch of shots from the day if anyones interested in having a look at what sort of shots you can achieve on the speedlight masterey day.
Thanks. Pooch.
Just like the Speedlight Mastery DVD – a superb blog. I also like the slideshows – have you tried animoto? A bit more zany than Fotomagico and have helped me to sell wedding and portrait shoots.
All the best,
John
