Infra red studio portraits ~ Pictures

4 comments July 2nd, 2010 01:59pm damien

I wanted to end the week by sharing with you some shots I took of Sarah Beaufoy using my Canon 5D IR. I took them during a private 1:3 studio lighting training session. The session was for a newly formed studio with a forward thinking approach to portraiture.

Infra red shots have a naturally low contrast in this kind of light. A texture and tint applied in post production completes the look.

First shoot with Nikon 14-24 lens on Canon 5D Infra Red body

I had my 5D converted to Infra Red by ACS cameras

I had my 5D converted to Infra Red capture by ACS cameras earlier this year and I bought an adapter to fit any Nikon lens to any Canon body. This gave me the opportunity to use the amazing Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 lens on my 5D IR.

The Adapter has a micro chip and the usual Canon electrical contacts that allow focus confirmation and normal non AF operation. The back focus is spot on and the zoom tracking is good too. The iris lever can be used to do stepless iris pulls when shooting video too;)

A few shots from Thursday including IR portraits

This portrait was lit with a Speedlight in an Orbis ring flash adapter. I used the PW system to expose using TTL. Orbis is the ring flash adapter that is not camera model specific. It is great for Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax too.

I had to modify the Orbis by adding a Velcro lock for my Speedlights to avoid them accidentally dropping out of the bottom. Over the next few weeks (more…)

Five pictures that charted my career. By Damien Lovegrove 2010

Mirage in the Western Desert in Egypt. Taken in 1996 on a Nikon FA with a 300mm Tamron lens and an unbranded 2x converter. This picture was shot for stock and continues to sell well today.

Mirage in the Western Desert in Egypt. Taken by me in 1996 using a Nikon F90 with a 300mm Tamron lens and an unbranded 2x converter on Kodachrome 64. This picture was shot for stock and continues to sell well today. Sales from this shot alone total over £20,000. Every GCSE student of Physics will recognise this shot from their text books. Dorling Kindersley love it too and it often appears in their publications.

Have you ever sat down and written a title for an essay with absolutely no idea how to complete the task? I perhaps stupidly suggested to Terry Hope, the editor of PhotoPro magazine that it would be fun to write a piece about just a few pictures that became stepping stones in my life. Then perhaps he could invite other photographers to write the same essay. He wrote back and said okay get the job done. So here is the start of what might be an interesting chain of personal stories loosely strung around photographs. (more…)

Infrared portrait ~ Picture and Technique

I thought I’d share this picture with you. I took it in a field of rapeseed that was in flower. I used flash in daylight on the Canon 10d camera that I’ve had converted for infrared use by ACS

IR photography is most often seen in black and white.

Infrared wedding pictures in colour – first findings

7 comments August 13th, 2008 04:03pm damien

Here is a selection of the infrared files from my recent weddings. I chose to shoot a few infrared pictures to explore the medium rather than make contenders for the wedding album. A Lovegrove album usually follows a fairly strict pattern of style and infrared pictures would stand out like a sore thumb. However, our clients have been very happy to buy albums for both themselves and their parents plus the occasional arty picture for the wall. So with this final product in mind I set about taking the arty picture for the wall. Scene setters with a romantic flavour will do just fine. (more…)

Colour IR Photoshop ® action – free download

Damien Lovegrove’s Adobe Photoshop® action for colour infrared photography

I’ve done a bit of online research to understand the processes other photographers use for colour infrared photography. I’ve created an action that utilitses the best bits of each and I then mixed in some image degradation too for good measure. Colour IR images really benefit from having the digital correctness knocked out of them and that is what I’ve aimed to do in this action.

IR Lens flare warning – Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L Mk11

3 comments August 12th, 2008 12:12pm damien

Lenses are designed and optimised to correct for flare and aberrations in visible light alone and I was completely caught out by these shortcomings when I started shooting colour infrared. My personal style is to always shoot into the light where possible and I found that my ‘top shelf’ Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L mk2 lens really suffered with flare in the infrared part of the spectrum. Canon 10D ir – Pros & Cons

26 comments August 12th, 2008 10:08am damien

It doesn’t take a specialist to understand the limitations of a 6 year old camera platform. It is never going to be the best, but it is readily available and for knock down prices. There are several to choose from on Ebay most of the time and they go for around £150 in good condition.

The biggest faults are the obvious ones that were corrected in subsequent cameras, so what’s hot and what’s not about the 10D as an infrared camera? (more…)
