A film about Damien Lovegrove by Fujilove (4k)

Jun 4, 2020 | Flash, Location, Video | 49 comments

Production Information: A one hour documentary for Fujilove by Tomasz Trzebiatowski and Jens Krauer about the celebrated photographer Damien Lovegrove. “In this revealing documentary, Jens uncovers a hidden side to this outwardly confident, charismatic photographer. We see Damien at his best shooting fashion on the streets of New York City and get his take on art and the life of a photographer.” (4k video)

Damien says: “We shot this video over one day in Brooklyn NY back in 2018. It was originally filmed by the Fujilove team for an ambitious project called Pholaborate. Unfortunately, Pholaborate didn’t survive, but I couldn’t let all this hard work go without getting an audience so with permission of Fujilove the complete video is now here for you to enjoy.”

Model: Denisa Strakova

Thanks for sharing this, Damien. I love the look of your photos and loved your e-book. The video was a great, and a revealing way to get to know you better. You, Neil Van Niekerk and Vincent Peters are my favourite living people photographers – how telling that both you and Neil had careers in television before becoming people photographers. I’ve had the pleasure of doing an excellent workshop with Neil: hopefully I will have the pleasure of getting across the pond to do one of your delicious looking workshops sometime soon once the world returns to something approaching normal. Keep up the great work! P.S. I also loved Peter Lindbergh’s work…

You know I see a lot of hotshot photographers that do some intriguing images but all too often they overshop them and I find it refreshing to see a photographer that just shoots it as it is and that is you Damien!…. More video’s on your new Scatterflash system please!! … Mine is on its way! :)

Thank you for your generous compliments. As soon as I can get out and shoot I’ll be doing more Scatterflash videos for sure. I’m all set up now to self film my BTS movies and I think it’s the way I’ll go.

Enjoy shooting with your Scatterflash :)

Love your work, no photoshop no schnickschnack (I don’t know it in englisch ) it’s pure :) would love to go to a workshop from you but how I see you doesn’t come to Germany :( Germans photographer could learn a lot from you! Keep well and fit and good luck to become a painter, im sure you can do it but before please come to Germany, just one time
    Lovely greetings from Berlin ❤️

      Hi Missy,

Thank you for the wonderful compliments. I’m glad you like the simplicity of my work. I like to keep it real. I used to shoot transparency back in the last century and that set me up to realise the light, exposure and composition has to be spot-on in-camera. There was no Photoshop back then and we all had to learn the craft. I’m not saying Photoshop is a bad thing but integrity in a photograph is precious.

Germany has been one of my main workshop and event destinations. I’ve run street workshops in Hamburg, Berlin and Baden Baden. Boudoir workshops in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Berlin and Baden Baden, and Studio Lighting workshops in Munich. My series of one-day talks in Germany took me to Frankfurt, Cologne, Stuttgart, Munich and Hamburg.

I will be back in Munich at Radmila Kerl’s studio at some point soon for sure plus I’ll visit Switzerland again to run workshops at least once more in my life too.

What I have discovered in recent times is, if I travel to places that I find visually and culturally exciting it will attract other photographers. These workshops then become more like creative holidays and the level of fun and creativity goes right up. It’s really hard to be fabulously enthusiastic and creative when faced with grey so this has changed my destination list somewhat.

Seeing as you live in Berlin you might like to see some of my pictures from your city: https://www.prophotonut.com/2011/09/26/boudoir-in-berlin-70-monochrome-pictures/ I loved Berlin and having spent a week or so there I feel I have ticked it off my bucket list.

      Kindest regards,

      Damien.

So nice to see a more personal portrait of you Damien! I have been on board with you since that first Natural light video, and through all the rest, and have joined you in Tuscany, and have learned so much that I have implemented into my own photography. Your positive personality, your know-how, and the way you handle people, is what is so inspiring to me, and probably to so many others. It’s been fun to follow your constant evolution as a photographer. Thanks for taking us with you on the ride! I look forward to what’s coming up next.

Super compliments indeed. It has indeed been a ride and I too look forward to the next chapter. My plans for 2021 include a road trip adventure through the deserts and ghost towns of California and Nevada plus another visit to our all-new Tuscany locations.

It would be wonderful to catch up again on a shoot/ workshop/ holiday/ adventure again.

      Kindest regards,

      Damien.

Watched this x 3 times… will watch it again and again. Been following Damien for what seems like years. Amazing lighting technician and artist. Learned so much from his videos and training tutorials… Fabulous photographer! I cannot understand why he sometimes feels less than confident in his abilities.. I think it just shows his humility. For me, he is one of the Worlds true professionals. Fabulous :-))))

I thoroughly enjoyed this Damien . Lovely insight and nicely presented.
I’ve noticed before that you don’t appear to over shoot when you nail a shot, whereas many photographers would keep going just to see if a minor change in a pose might surprise as an option. They say pixels are free, or am I just a canny Scot ?

    Reply
    • Damien

      Thank you Dave,

Pixels are free but the time taken to sort them out is more valuable than diamonds. I’ve found far more enjoyment in life when I’ve been working fast and efficiently. The keepers/ day ratio is important for me to maintain my passion and drive to keep on keeping on.

I think it is time we went on another desert adventure.

      I’ll keep you posted ;)

      Thank you Laurent,

It was a nerve-wracking process being interviewed by Jens. He really knows how to pull the right/ wrong strings. I’m pleased with the integrity of the film. It would not have been something I could have published when I was at the height of my retail career. Brand image is something that stifles the truth. I’m glad you found it of value.

Those are Lastolite Jupiter stands. They are wide, lightweight and they go nice and high. They are really cheap too. Less than £40
