Interesting new Elinchrom location flash option

Martin writes: Amongst all the Photokina hype this one passed me by until now:  Elinchrom has just announced an interesting new 400WS version of their Ranger flash kit.  Details here (pdf, opens in new window).

Couple of interesting things about this:  First it gives a light weight and (one assumes) lower cost entry to the robust location flash Ranger line.  Second Elinchrom has addressed one of the principal problems with the Ranger line – the size of the head.  Instead you get a small head with the option of a bayonet adapter to allow you to fit full size Elinchrom accessories.

For my shooting style 400ws falls in a middle ground that isn’t that useful.  I usually find that if a speedlight up close won’t cut it I need the power of the 1200ws Broncolor Mobilite.  So what I’m interested in seeing is a new Q-style head for the full power Ranger packs.  That would be compelling for me because it would allow me to use all my Elinchrom light modifiers on location.

Amazing news – will be getting BX 500 and Ranger Quanta.

Just the Quanta looks a bit not as well finished / built as well as the normal Ranger ?

400Ws is fine for use with a small softbox or a brolly at about 3m from flash to subject. It is 8x more powerful (2 stops brighter) than a typical Speedlight.

This falls neatly into the Quantum Qpax territory, however the Quantum system offers full TTL functionality with Nikon, Canon and Hasselblad among others. The Quantum kit is expandable up to 800Ws too.

The USP must be an inter connectivity with other Elinchrom accessories. If you shoot location portraits this might just be the kit for you.
